The rest of us are not likely to lose our taste for beer any time soon. No matter what time of day or night it is, you can be sure that someone somewhere in the world is enjoying a beer right now.
Although the growing popularity of wine, wine bars, and "designer drinks" has nudged beer drinking statistics a bit lower in recent years, some emerging trends are breathing a new life into the beer industry.
In the UK, laws are changing to move closing hours beyond the 11 p.m. mandated closing time. Other laws (Beer Orders) place a limit on the number of outlets (pubs) that can be owned by the big breweries. And beer in cans is a growing trend!
In the U.S. and Canada, micro- breweries, breweries that produce fewer than 15,000 barrels of beer per year, are part of a growing craft industry that includes homemade and specialty beers. The brewpub is also a growing industry; this is an institution that brews its own beer, mainly for consumption on the premises. Clearly, North Americans have a developed a thirst for diversity.
Ironically, this is really a return to the earlier days of brewing, when English pubs brewed their own beer, or earlier still when monasteries brewed for nearby villages and towns.
Smaller batches tend to result in tastier, more interesting beers, with more attention paid to detail and to the quality of the ingredients. Also, smaller breweries result in regional specialties, creating a more varied landscape overall.
